Martin Rowe Wins APPT Sydney Grand Final    December 08, 2008

Martin Rowe

There's been plenty of exciting poker at the Star City Casino in Sydney with the PokerStars.com Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final going on.

Many thrilling games and 477 rivals down the line, Martin Rowe walked away with the championship and prize money of AU $1,000,000. Rowe is 34 years old, from Sydney, and a regular Star City player. This is Rowe’s first APPT title, and it gets him entry into the APPT Tournament of Champions.

The nine players at the final table were from a range of professions – Martin Rowe had to beat a racehorse owner from Canada, a marketing executive, a student, a retired engineer and quite a few poker professionals.

When play at the final table began, Antonio Fazzolari was in the lead as far as chip counts were concerned. He used this to good advantage and was responsible for the ousting of Tom Rafferty, who was eliminated at ninth place and had to be satisfied with a prize of AU $39,200. Rafferty had a good chip count to start with, too, but he went to the rail when the river was hit.

Hai Bo Chu was the short stack player at the final table. This marketing executive from Melbourne was eliminated by Martin Rowe when the latter came in under a gun in a three-way pot with Fazzolari and Hai Bo Chu. Chu went out of the game in eighth place, taking home AU $53,200.

Daniel Kowalski's tight game earned him a seventh place in the tournament and netted him AU $72,800. It was Frank Saffioti who eliminated Kowalski.

An hour or so after the post-dinner play began, an ace-king high from Rowe eliminated Antonio Fazzolari, giving him fourth place and AU $182,000. Shortly after, Tony Basile was also eliminated by Rowe and Basile took the third place prize of AU $266,000.

It was poker pro Jason Gray who came head to head with the eventual winner Martin Rowe. When head to head play began, Jason Gray had 1,595,000 chips and Rowe was way ahead with 7,805,000 chips. It wasn’t an easy victory for Rowe, though – he had to battle it out for more than two hours before he defeated Gray to win the PokerStars.com Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final. Gray won AU $476,000.
