Gus Hansen

Gus Hansen

For some one who became a professional poker player only in 1997, Gustav Hansen is a record holder for having won three World Poker Tour titles.

He has won the main event of the 2007 Aussie Millions and is also the winner of the first season of Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. "The Great Dane" as he is called was born on February 13, 1974 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He currently resides in Monaco.

Like most other poker players of his time Hansen had other interests before he made it big in the world of poker. He made a name for himself as a young tennis player and was a player to reckon with when it came to backgammon. He was also a very successful athlete participating in both in-door and out-door sports. Before becoming a professional poker player Hansen turned pro playing backgammon but was soon getting bored with it. He is a self confessed gambler and is known for taking bets on athletic challenges in which he participates.

It was in 1993 that Hansen started to play poker at the Ocean View Card Room in Santa Cruz, California. Known for his very loose yet extremely aggressive style of play he would raise no matter what two cards he had in hand. This translated to his opponents raising his bets even when he had the best hand and this obviously brought him bigger earnings. In little over 10 years of turning professional, as of 2008 Hansen is believed to have made over $7,100,000.

Hansen was a founding partner of the online poker site pokerchamps.com which was sold for over $15,000,000 to a British company called Betfair in 2005. His official website is www.gushansenpoker.com and can be found playing online poker exclusively at www.fulltiltpoker.com. His official site comprises of his blog which is regularly updated with the tournament he is at and the hands he played there. It also has tips from this master card player. He also has www.theplayr.com which keeps track of Hansen's every move and is a poker community website.

Poker players are known to win a wide variety of titles and get awards that carry their names, Hansen is no exception. He had a documentary based on him in 2003, called Royal Straight Flush. He was voted by People magazine editors as the "Sexiest Poker Player" in their December 2004 issue. In 2007 he found himself in a movie playing poker with David Williams. He is also a spokesmodel for a Danish men's fashion line called Frank Q which he wears during public appearances. When it comes to awards, titles and recognition Hansen has them coming from all corners.

"Every Hand Revealed" is a book by Hansen detailing every step that brought him the 2007 Aussie Millions. Poker players would be advised to read it if they are serious about improving their game especially when you consider that he had to beat 747 players in the field to take home the AUD 1,500,000 prize money.

Hansen is a regular in "Bobby's Room" at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
