Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933 in Fisher County, Texas.

In the fifty years that he has been playing poker he has earned many a title and awards that have his name on them. He is the first poker player to have won the World Series of Poker main event on consecutive occasions. His name can be found in the Poker Hall of fame and has written number of books on poker which are highly regarded.

Among the many firsts that Doyle Brunson achieved is that of being the first poker player to breach the $ 1 million in earnings. In his 50 years of playing poker he has won 10 World Series of Poker bracelets. He is credited with being one of the only 4 players who have won the main event at the World Series of Poker number more than once. He is also the first of 5 players who have won a World Poker Tour title and the WSOP main event.

During his college days Doyle was deeply interested in basketball and running. However injuries dashed any hopes he had of making it big in either of them. It is around 1954 that Doyle got his taste of big earnings that card games can offer and then there was no looking back.

Taking to poker during the time he did meant that it was not as organized as it is now. Those who claimed to be running it were mostly members of organized crime to whom rules meant nothing. Doyle found himself at the wrong end of a gun on number of occasions and also losing his earnings to robbers sometimes getting bruised as well. His first attempt at making it big in Las Vegas was a total disaster but that did not deter him from continuing to play.

Though playing poker brought him fame and fortune, it is writing about it which got him the most recognition. His book Super/System helped many an aspiring poker player improve their game. In 2004 he released an updated version of Super/System titled Super/System 2 in which several other poker players like Joey Hawthorne, David Sklansky, Chip Reese, Mike Caro and Bobby Baldwin chipped in with their contributions as well.

At the Bellagio, Doyle can be found playing $4000/$8000 limit mixed poker game in "Bobby's room". He can also be found participating in major tournaments held around the world. Having two Texas hold'ems named after him are two of the many honors that Doyle has been conferred with. Thanks to an announcers mistake Doyle got the nickname of "Texas Dolly". To some of his fellow professional players in the circuit he is simply "Dolly".

Doyle like all other players today endorses online poker; the one he endorses is called Doyle's room. It was founded in 2004. His official site www.doylebrunson.com offers users a chance to chat with this legendary player. It also has forums for poker players as well as articles and tips on strategy that could turn a poker player in to a very good one. Doyle's earnings as of 2008 from live tournaments exceed $5,300,000.
